
DUMI FARM
TIFIE has focused some of its efforts in Dumi, an village area two hours away from Kinshasa, Congo. TIFIE's vision and plan is to train local villagers in job skills and provide employment opportunities, so that individuals can provide for themselves and their families. TIFIE has focused some of its efforts in Dumi, an village area two hours away from Kinshasa, Congo, creating a large scale farm to supply food to the community, an education facility teaching agriculture and animal husbandry skills, as well as a retreat for employees and visitors to volunteer and do humanitarian work. Employment options at Dumi are varied, and change with the season.
Employment Projects
- Agriculture: Between 100-200 villagers are seasonally hired to attend to the 4500 acre farm that produces a variety of fruit, vegetables, and trees. Produce such as cassava, pineapple moringa, acacia, eggplant, hot peppers and sweet potatoes is harvest. Villagers can harvest and sell the produce in local markets and markets in Kinshasa, further generating their household income. TIFIE has hired a dedicated agronomist with extensive knowledge of sustainable farming practices and farm management to manage the farm.
- Infrastructure Improvement: TIFIE has received a grant to resurface the road to Dumi and a local road, providing surrounding villages reliable and safe transportation for businesses and personal travel. TIFIE was also able to hire villagers to build a warehouse that serves as a market center for excess produce and goods.
- Animal Husbandry: TIFIE has begun animal husbandry practice with rabbits at the DUMI Farm. Rabbits are bred, card for, then sold in the surrounding areas.
- Seed Multiplication: Over 130 members of local agricultural associations were taught about seed multiplication. These members planted seeds on the land near Dumi and tripled the income of each family involved. Over 50% of the members were women, and 35% were women managers.
- Create a Model Community: TIFIE plans on using our facilities and expertise at DUMI to create a model community that can be replicated throughout Congo. This would include city planning for roads, sewers, water, and energy as well as schools, health clinics, and other community services.
