Universal Education: Primary education in the Democratic Republic of Congo is neither free nor universal, and many children are unable to attend school because their parents are unable to pay the enrollment fees. Parents are also responsible for paying the salaries of the teachers. For most children and families the expense of keeping a child in school for an entire year is too costly. As much as 40 percent of children will drop out of school before the year is complete. With Tifie and its sponsored enterprises, access to universal education is enjoyed.
Tifie contributes to the funding and development of school facilities, educational materials, as well as the renovation of existing and building of new schools. In addition, Tifie sponsored enterprises make financial contributions to fund teacher salaries and student tuitions. Finally, with Tifie's renewable power systems schools receive enough power to generate electricity for lighting and the powering of computer systems.
The Tifie donated solar system provided a unique opportunity for one school in Mosabo to utilize it as a power utility for consumer use. Through the electricity generated by the solar panels, the school master is able to charge cell phones for a nominal price; children bring their parents’ cell phones in to charge during the day, and return them that night. The money is then used to pay the fees for an additional 80 students. The Mosabo school now provides education for 300 children.
